I. V. Voloshina. SPATIAL STRUCTURE OF THE ROOKERY AND ANALYSIS OF ITS USAGE BY SEALS // Bull. Mosc. Soc. Natur. Biol. ser. 1998. V. 103, part 6. P. 3-8.

Abstract

The results of monitoring held on two constant rookeries of harbour seal (Phoca largha) during seven years are given. The correlation of usage of the rock area and number of seals was shown. High positive correlation of these parameters was recorded up number of 80 individuals. If the number of seal increases, the given ratio approximates to exponential.

Abstract

Seven taxa of the Rhynocephalus ocellatus sensu lato complex, representing 13 localities, were analyzed on 18 biochemical loci. The observed level of allozyme heterozygosity (H obs = 0,05) corresponded to the expected one (H exp = 0,048) and generally was close to the heterozygosity level of reptile populations. The balance between homoand heterozygotic genotypes could be seen in all the populations except for the nominative subspecies of P. r. Rossikowi from Karakalpakia, according to Aat-S, in which heterozygotes were completely absent.

Calculations of the genetic distances (D Nei) have been made and the quantities of the fixed loci substitutions have been ascertained which gave grounds for creating the phenograms. They show the multi-level system of genetic interrelations of the representatives of the complex. The first level is that of the population. The second one is subspecific among different geographical forms of P.raddei and P.ocellatus. The third is interspecific within the "ocellatus - strauchi - raddei" complex. The last is interspecific between P.rossikowi and "ocellatus - strauchi - raddei" group.

Abstract

Acanthephyra purpurea occurs in the North Atlantic within the North Atlantic subtropical convergence zone at the depth of 500 to 1200 m. It may be found in each catch and accounts for 33,6 % of total shrimp biomass. This interzonal species ascends to the mesopelagic layer at night and occupies the upper bathypelagic layers during the day. Diurnal migrations, regardless to the ontogenetic stage, are carried out at the same speed. Maturation as well as the first two (and the third one possible) spawnings occur at the second and the third year of the life span, respectively. During the first three years the shrimp studied consequently gains 40, 20 and 10 mm of length respectively. Realized fecundity ranges from 165 to 2.707 eggs. A.purpurea is a plankton-eater originally but during its life span it becomes a macroplankton-eater and even micronectonic predator. The basic components of the shrimps' diet are juveniles and small mesoand bathypelagic fish and predatory euphausiids. It is an attacking-type organism, and it was found to attack the organisms that it cannot catch entirely.

Abstract

Four years dynamics of three flood-plain meadows were investigated. Festuca valesiaca-cover dynamics depended on the soil thickness. It increased on shallow soil (loamy layer 2-5 cm), was stable on middle soil, and decreased on deep rich soil due to competition with taller species.

Abstract

Different forms of rosette plants were determined according the length of internodes, namely - long-shooted, sympodial semi-rosette, sympodial rosette plants as well as sympodial forms with the plagiotropic shortened shoots. Rosette part of the plant composes either resumption zone or inhibition zone, inflorescence and secondary vegetative growth. Apparently, rosette herbs emerged at the different evolutionary stages, originating from different ancestral forms as a result of basal, medial and terminal deviation as well as geophily.

G. M. Rusanov. FISH HAWK (PANDION HALIAETUS) AT VOLGA DELTA // Bull. Mosc. Soc. Natur. Biol. ser. 1998. V. 103, part 6. P. 42-44.

Abstract

Nesting of fish hawks in Astrakhan Reserve was first documented in 1939. Then, according to three records of fish hawks at Volga delta, nesting of 20 couples (1981), 26 couples (1987) and 20 couples (1995) was registered. There were two individuals in an average hatch (n=29). During the period of 1990-1995 13 younglings hatched successfully on artificial nesting platform. The construction of the nesting platform, designed and used by the author in order to prevent nests from being destroyed by stormy winds is described in the present paper.

Abstract

The present paper includes the data on the associations of the larvae of ten Lycaenidae and 8 Formicidae species. The associations revealed were of the following types: symbiosis (N.quercus, G.alexis, P.boisduvalii, P.icarus, C.semiargus); myrmecoxeny (L.tityrus, T.dispar, E.argiades?); cleptoparasitism (M.nausithous); the type of the association formed by Callophrys rubi was not determined (symbiosis? cleptoparasitism?).

Abstract

The results of the field floristic investigation in Saratov and Belgorod Provinces are summarized. New data are presented on 18 species of the flowering plants. Seven of the species are recorded as new for the flora of Saratov Province (Erucastrum gallicum, Astragalus longiflorus, Vicia hirsuta, Anagallis minima, Prunella grandiflora, Veronica anagalloides, Cirsium pannonicum) and one species (Stellaria crassiflora) - for the Belgorod Province. On the other hand, Geranium pusillum should be excluded from the flora of Saratov Province.

Abstract

The article contains of Typha x glauca diagnostic attributes. The differentiation of T. x glauca from both T.latifolia and T.angustifolia is displayed at the table provided. The status of some interspecific taxa of T.latifolia s. l. and T.angustifolia s. l. and their relation to T. x glauca is discussed. The ecology and distribution of T. x glauca is briefly discussed. It is offered to place T. x glauca in Typha nothosect. Typhaolatae E. Mavrodiev et Yu. Alexeev nothosect. nova (T. sect. Typha x T. sect. Bracteolatae Graebner)
