Sakharov Conference (2005) -- Testimonial Letter from Moscow Department of Education (2005) RESEARCH INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS DIVERSITY AND INTERACTIONS OF PLANTS AND MICROBES 1994-- Taxonomy databases and other taxonomic Internet resources. Participating in "Encyclopedia of Life" project with the goal to construct unified database for all names of organisms ("Union"). Internet projects on leading Russian botanical "Herba" web-site (http://herba.msu.ru): "Herbarium on-line", "Living plants pictures", "Materials of A. Shipunov", "Materials of the White Sea expedition", "Russian botanical Forum". Constructed the Interactive Web-keys for description of diverse aquatic plants and plantains. Prepared new numeric methods for analysis of stability in classifications. Several ideas about metacharacters and cladogram/hierarchy controversies (e.g., paraphyly) are employing in current research. Textbook for contemporary methods in systematics is published. 1990-- Diversity of living organisms, theory of taxonomy. Suggested the original classification of living organisms, based on combined data from many researches (Internet-resource). Textbook is prepared (see below). Taxonomy of anamorphic fungi (especially of order Pleosporales) is studied; numerous new fungal lineages of anamorphic ascomycetes are already discovered via molecular methods, and more than 100 sequences are submitted to GenBank. 1992-- New classification of flowering plants -- Angiospermae (Shipunov, 2003, also available via Internet). Two new plant families were described. Also study the diversity of pollen structure in Asteraceae and related families (in collaboration with S.V.Polevova). 2006-- Diversity and roles of fungal endophytes from invasive spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) in its introduced and native ranges, with an emphasis on plant-endophyte-insect interactions. Number of endophyte roles is already discovered in current research, three papers are in preparation. Project data are available via Internet (http://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~shipunov). GEOGRAPHY, EVOLUTION AND CONSERVATION OF PLANTS 2002--2007 -- Evolution, geography and conservation biology of European Russian orchids, with emphasis to Dactylorhiza. Developed and studied microsatellite and polymorphic fragments markers, determined origin, geographical patterns and possible maternal parents of allopolyploids; employed simultaneous analysis of morphometric and molecular data and geometric morphometry analysis. 1994--2007 Geography, evolution and biology of invasive and introduced species in European Russia and Caucasus: plantains, knotweeds (Polygonum), and alders (Alnus) -- ongoing; compiled the catalogue of introduced flora of Sochi region (a collaborative project) and a key for the description of cultivated ornamental plants. 1994--2002 -- Geography, biology and diversity of plantains (Plantago and Psyllium). Prepared the critical digest of the species of the genera Plantago, Psyllium and Littorella (family Plantaginaceae) on the European Russia. Compiled morphological descriptions, composed distribution maps, described current invasion events; compiled keys for description of Plantaginaceae, Scrophulariaceae and other close families of Middle Russia (Majevsky, 2006). One new species and one new section are described. 1994-- Flora of Northern and Middle Russia (all materials are available via Internet). Researching evolution and geography of plants on small islands of Russian White Sea; working with microsystematics and evolution of Carex salina hybrid complex with emphasis on conservation biology of these rare species (in collaboration with C. Brochmann and P. A. Volkova); cataloging vascular plants of the Guba Tchupa and Dalnie Zelentsy regions; conducted a comparative study of flora of Guba Kiv islands and lakes in this region. Cataloging vascular plants of lake Moldino environs, plants of adjacent lakes and plants of Udomlja district as a whole; completed an identification key for Moldino plants based on vegetative characters (in collaboration with V. V. Choob). 1992-- Flora of Caucasus, with emphasis to Black Sea coast: studying of multi-colored primrose (Primula vulgaris) geography and evolution; studied the diversity of Caucasus and Crimea ivy (Hedera) species; composed a textbook with description key of spring flora. STRUCTURE AND BEHAVIOUR OF PLANTS 1998--2008 Behavior of plants, with emphasis on carnivorous sundew (Drosera) and "biological clock" water-lily (Nymphaea), in collaboration with P. A. Volkova. Behavior of water-lily flowers under different environment conditions is studied; biology of carnivorous sundew plants investigated with employing of unique method of continuous observations. Geography and diversity of these plants are also studying. 1998--2001 -- Plant life forms: studied taxonomic significance of "architectural models" of woody flowering plants; suggested an original classification of plant life forms based on general growth characteristics (in collaboration with Yu. N. Carpun). Developed formal approaches to the description of flowers with potential applications to evolutionary divergence measurements.
