INFLUENCE OF HABITAT CONDITIONS ON THE STRUCTURE AND PRODUCTIVITY OF MOUNTAIN TUNDRA (KHIBINY, MURMANSK PROVINCE)

G.I. Ushakova, N.Yu. Shmakova, N.E. Koroteva

Summary

The paper deals with structure of tundra plant communities of Khibiny mountains, which are situated along the topographical gradient. Yellow lichen-dominated communities disposed on the wind-swept ridges, as well as dwarf shrubs and gray lichens-dominated extreme snow-beds had the lowest total biomass (700-1500 g/m2), respectively, with the main root portion in the mineral soil horizons. Dwarf shrubs-dominated heath on gentle mountain slope had the highest total biomass (2800 g/m2), the woody perennial stems prevailed in the aboveground biomass, and the main root portion concentrated in the litter. The grass and sedge meadow in the hollow had the greatest total net primary production (214 g/m2), and roots evenly distributed in the whole soil profile.

GEOMETRIDS (LEPIDOPTERA, GEOMETRIDAE) OF THE PINEZHSKY NATURE RESERVE

E.M. Antonova, A.M. Tikhomirov

Summary

Based on annual collecting in 1991-1994 alist of 69 species of Geometridae was prepared for the fauna of the Pinezhsky Nature Reserve, north-central Arkhangelsk Region, European Russia. For each species information on localities for records, phenology and ecology is given.

ECOLOGY AND ALTITUDINAL DISTRIBUTION OF SOME SPECIES CYPERACEAE IN THE CENTRAL CAUCASUS

A.L. Komha, A.M. Amirkhanov

Summary

The article contains new data on the distribution and ecology of 30 taxons of the ๓ีาลวมำลมล family in the Central Caucasus. The habitats of these species are found on the territory extending from the piedmont plain to Glavnyi (Vodorazdeini) Range at a altitude of 400 to 4000 m above the sea level. Information on their distribution in the North-Ossetian Reserve is given. We introduced corrections into the data on the upper altitudinal limits of several species of this family.

HYBRIDIZATION IN SAXIFRAGES AND ITS ROLE IN EVOLUTION OF GENUS SAXIFRAGA L. (SAXIFRAGACEAE)

P.Yu. Zhmylev

Summary

Data on natural hybridization in saxifrages, including the number, distribution, and morphological characteristics of hybrids, are presented. The majority of examples refer to intrasectional hybridization, that has episodic and, often, recurrent (polytopic) character. It is suggested that such rare events could have great significance in morphological evolution of genus Saxifraga.

COMPLEX CHARACTERISTIC OF HUMAN-DISTURBED COMMUNITIES ON OIL OUTPUT TERRITORIES OF FOREST TUNDRA ZONE

D.A. Shakhin, V.M. Telesnina, A. V. Kuvaev

Summary

Main attention paid and soil mesofauna in the course of studies of nature communities in forest tundra and southern tundra in areas disturbed by human activities on oil development in West Siberia and European of Russia. Four categories of destroyed communities were distinguished. First, areas under intensive current use are characterized by almost complete destruction of soil and vegetation cover as well as its mesofauna. Second category includes sites with recovering patchy vegetation at its early (pioneer)succession stages growing on completely destroyed soil in areas were human activity had been stopped. Third category is represented by areas with secondary ecosystems well-developed on already natural but strongly transformed soils. Forth category combines slightly disturbed communities.

ANNUAL HORN SEGMENTS IN FEMALE DAGHESTAN TUR (CAPRA CYLINDRICORNIS BLYTH) AS POSSIBLE INDICATORS OF REPRODUCTION

P.J. Weinberg

Summary

Growth of horns of 44 adult Daghestan tur females from the North Ossetian Nature Reserve has been studied. A hypothesis is suggested that the dynamics of this growth reflects the reproductive history of each given female. According to this hypothesis, the dependence of average reproductive activity upon age in Daghestan tur females is presented and the calculated overall fecundity is compared to that inferred from field observations.
