VECTOR SYSTEMS AND MENOTAXIS IN ORIENTATION AND MOVEMENTS OF ELK (ALCES ALCES L., MAMMALIA)
V.A. Zaitsev
Summary
Orientation and movements of Elks are studies with help of instrumental recording of movement trajectories of these animals. Orientation of Elks is based on hiererchical principle of behavioral organization and includes participation of menotaxical way of orientation with trajectories of several main types. Parameters of various orientation and spatial movements are characterized statistically.
LONG-TERM DYNAMICS OF NUMBERS, AGE AND SEX STRUCTURE OF THE DAGHESTAN TUR (CAPRA CYLINDRICORNIS BLYTH, 1841) POPULATION IN NORTH OSSETIAN NATURE RESERVE, THE CAUCASUS
P.J. Weinberg
Summary
Population study of Daghestan Tur was carried out in 1975-2000. In the second half of the 1980s and in the beginning of the 1990s ratios of kid: female and yearling: female in the population decreased substantially, coinciding with a succession of severe snowy winters in 1987-93. Kid: female ratio in July-September and kid survival rate correlates negatively with depth of snow in the preceding winter. Changes in the age staicture were the reason of two-fold decrease of the Daghestan Tur population. Poaching reached the highest level in the same years and eli- minated mostly males, thus also contributed significantly to the population decline by effecting sex structure These effects were probably regional and covered the central and north-western Caucasus. Nevertheless obtained data indicate considerable stability of a mean group sizes in areas of any given topoghraphy and vegetation structure.
ON THE DETAILS OF DISRIBUTION OF SEVERAL TERRESTRIAL TETRAPODA ON THE FAR NORTH-EAST OF EUROPEAN PART OF RUSSIA AND ON THE SOUTH OF YAMAL PENUNSULA
V.N. Kalyakin
Summary
More then 10 000 specimens of fishes, amphibians, reptilians, birds and mammals were identified in pellets of birds of prey collected during 1983-1999 in 15 points on the north-eastern part of European Russia and north of Western Siberia including Vaigatch Island and Novaya Zemlya Archipelago. These data with addition of some other materials allow to exchange in knowledge on distribution of several mammal species. They show that ranges of Sorex tundrensis, Lepus timidus, Microtus middendorffi, M. gregalis, M. nivalis and M. erminea include Vaigatch Island, Ì. gregalis recorded in one point on the southern coast of Southern Island of Novaya Zemlya, Microtus oeconomus was discovered in far north-west of Yugorskii Penunsular and Ondatra ybethica - in delta of the Bolshoi Oyu River. Northern limits of range of Arvicola terrestris include Bay Sinkin Nos and the upper Usa River, ones of Microtus agrestis, Ì. middendorffi and Clethrionomys rutilus - Bolshaya Rogovaya River valley and the upper Usa River. The western border of the range of Ì. middendorffi is Bolshaya Rogovaya River valley. The range of Clethrionomys rutilus and C. rufocanus on the south of Yamal Penunsula almost reaches the coast of Baidaratskaya Bay and ones of Arvicola terrestris and Microtus oeconomus not include watershed between the Ob River and Karskoe Sea. It seems that the northern border of the territory of constant presence of Meles meles in the north of Western Siberia crossing South-West Yamal. Lacerta vivipara was found in the lower Schuchya River valley, Rana arvalis and R. temporaria were more common in the upper Usa River then in the Schuchya River basin. Several addition archeological data show that local ecosystems have been exchange not long ago under the influence of human activity.

A.N. Luferov
Summary
Three subsections are suggested for buttercups of subgenus Ranunculus of section Flammula: Flammulae Pranti emend. Luferov, Lingua Luferov subsect. nov., Strigillosi Luferov subsect. nov.; in section Ranunculus - subsection Punctati (Malacha) Luferov comb. et stat. nov.; for subgenus. Batrachium Peterm. - section Heterophylles (Dumort.) Luferov comb. nov. and 4 subsection: Littorales (V. Krecz. ex Tzvel.) Luferov comb. nov., Peltafi (V. Krecz. ex Tzvel.) Luferov comb. nov., Trichophylli (Dumort.) Luferov combi et stat. nov., Circinati (V. Krecz. ex Tzvel.) Luferov comb. nov. The nomenclatural combinations species range are published: Ranunculus hultenii (Worosch.) Luferov comb. et stat. nov., R. nevensis (Tzvel.) Luferov comb. nov., R. saichinensis (Klinkova) Luferov comb. nov.
ON THE NESTING AND EMBRYOGENIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE WILLOW GROUSE (LAGOPUS LAGOPUS) ON THE KANIN NOS PENINSULA
V.D. Anisimov, L.I. Barsova
Summary
It was estimated in the period from 10 June to 1 July 1990 that Willow Grouse Lagopus lagopus had high breeding density on the Kanin Nos Peninsula. Complete egg clutches consisted of 7 to 14 eggs being 11,9 on the average. Changes of masses of eggs and embryos during the second half of incubation are given in the table. Together with some external anatomical characteristics of embryos these can be used for oging of embryos during field studies.
RARE CAPTURE OF SINGLE-EYED ROUND SNAILFISH CAREPROCTUS ROSEOFUSCUS (LIPARIDAE, PISCES)
A.M. Orlov, LA. Biryukov
Summary
A single-eyed immature male round snailfish Careproctus roseofuscus with lenght of 331 mm and weight of 650 g was caught in the Pacific waters off the northern Kurile Islands in September 2000. This is the first case of cyclopia among snailfishes (Liparidae, Scorpaeniformes). The lack of one eye did not affect the development of external characters of the specimen but probably had an influence on its maturation rate.
