THE INTRACENTUARY DYNAMICS OF DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGY OF SOME BREEDING WADERS AT THE NORTHERN PART OF LOWER VOLGA REGION

E.V. Zavialov, V.G. Tabachishin, G.V. Shlyachtin, T.A Kapranova

Summary

The investigation of the present distribution and ecology of 7 species of breeding waders at the northern part of Lower Volga region was carried out during the period of 1991-1995. These species are Recurvirostra avosetta L., Haematopus ostmlegus L., Tringa totanus (L.), Actitts hypoleucos (L.), Gallinago gallinago (L.), Gallinago madia (Latham) and Scolopax rusticola L. The data on the interancient dynamics of waders distribution and number were obtained by the analysis of the hterature since the middle of XIXth century.

At present in Saratov province Recurvirostra avosetta L. Inhabits the small districts at the south of Trans-Volga region (Volga left bank region). Besides, some breeding birds were registered at the Saltova sandy intrazonal area. Haematopus ostmlegus is a not numerous spesies inhabited the river valleys of Saratov province. This species nests at the banks of rivers Volga, Tereshka, Medveditsa, Malii Uzen, Bolshoy irgiz and Maliy lrgiz, Yeruslan. The analysis of a literature allow us to reveal that at the beginning and in the middle of this century and in the nineties the species number was depressed. The most part of Saratov province Tringa totanus settlements are situated in Trans-Volga region. The flood-lands biotopes of Volga Right Bank region included the naked sand coastal zones are the most preferable for Actitis hypoleucos. That is why the stable nesting places of this species are situated at the banks of Don basin rivers (Medveditsa and Hoper) and Volga Right Bank tributaries. The nesting populations of sandpipers are distributed over the Trans-Volga region wide but mosaic. Common Sandpiper's population number are lower at this region than the number of Volga Right Bank region populations. The breeding is reliably detected for Gallinago media only at the two points of Saratov province (the flood-lands of the river Medveditsa and flood-lands of the river Volga to the north of Saratov). The settlements of Gallinago gallinago at the north of Lower Volga region are relatively stable. The high aridity of the forest-steppe and steppe zones limits the southern boundary of this species habitat. The nesting places of Scolopax rusticola are wide spread over the north and west parts of the Volga Right Bank Region. The southern boundary of this species habitat at the studied region coincides with the Saratov latitude. Through the valleys of Don basin rivers this species penetrates the south to Volgograd province. The antropogenic transformation of Scolopax rusticola habitat leads to the decreasing of it's population number.

STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION OF THE BREEDING BIRD COMMUNITIES IN THE BRYANSKY LES NATURE RESERVE

S.M. Kosenko, E.Yu. Kaigorodova

Summary

Breeding bird communities of the major forest associations of the Bryansky Les Nature Reserve, Central European Russia, were studied in 1993-1995. Birds were censused by the mapping method at three studiy plots of 15-24,75 ha. Forty-nine breeding bird species were recorded on all studied plots during the study period with mean number of dominant species from four (pine forest) to five (broadleaved-coniferous and oak-ash forests). The dominant species constituted from 57,4% (oak-ash forest) to 85,4% (pine forest). The broadleaved-coniferous forest and oak-ash forest were characterized by the highest species richness (on average species and 27 species respectively) and highest species diversity (the values of Simpson's index are 6,39 and 7,84 respectively). The mean overall density of breeding birds varied from 31 pairs/IO ha (pine forest) to 103,3 pairs/IO ha (oak-ash forest). Variation coefficient of the total bird species number varied from 5,1% in the broadleaved-conciferous forest to 11,2% in the pine forest. Compensatory fluctuations of the breeding bird density predominated in the broadleaved-conciferous forest while parallel ones in the pine forest.

STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT OF ROOT SISTEMS IN SALVIA L. (LABIATAE) IN RELATION TO LIFE FORMS

Baikova E.V.

Summary

The root system morphology and development in 27 species of the genus Salvia L. were investigated. Three types of rootage were revealed. The first one is a tap-root system, the second one is a mixed root system and the third type is a clustering root system with tubers formed from adventitious roots. It was shown that there is a strong relation between the type of sage rootage and sage life-form. The common trends of developments of root and shoot systems were detected. These trends are high capacity of branching towards the axial structures of root and shoot systems in the rosetteless species and clear structural differentiation of these systems in the rosette-forming species. The capacity to form of adventitious roots is a primary feature of rosetteless species. This feature was lost in rosette-forming species during the process of xerophytization.

THE MORPHOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF SIBERIAN ROE (CARPEOLUS PYGARGUS PALLAS, 1771) OF TUVA REPUBLIC

M.N. Smirnov

Summary

The mean values of body morphometrical characters, horn lenght and body weight were obtained by the statistical analysis of the random sampling (73 adult animals) of roe of Tuva Republic. The values of roe male characters are significantly higher than the female ones. The intersexual differences of the head circumbuccal color type frequency were revealed (the number of analyzed animals is 133). The roe of Tuva Republic may be considered as Siberian subspecies (C.p. pygargus Pallas, 1771) on the account of their body morphometrical characters and body weight. This is confirmed by the fact that animals of Tuva Republic significantly differ in morphometrical and phenotypical characters from the animals of West ZabaykaUye undoubtedly belonged to Tian-Shan subspecies (C.p. tianshanicus Satunin, 1906).

The analysis of roe head circumbuccal color type frequency (Smirnov, 1978) revealed that the use of this feature has a good perspective for the investigation of the species and population structure.

TAXONOMIC COMPOSITION OF AEROPALYNOLOGICAL SPECTRUM OF MOSCOW CITY

E.E. Severova, S.V. Polevova, N.R. Meyer-Melikyan, I.Yu. Bovina

Summary

Daily concentration of the airborne pollen has been recorded in Moscow city since 1992 during the period from mid-March till mid-September yearly with Burkard volumetric trap. Pollen grains of 40 types were determined, 16 of them form 97-99% of annual pollen spectrum. The season of pollination was divided into the three periods. The first one is associated with trees (Betula, Alms, Corylus, Salix, Populus, etc.), the second one - with Pinus and Poaceae and the third period with Artemisia, Urtica, Chenopodiaceae and Poaceae pollination. Great variability of annual pollen sum was observed for the majority of investigated taxa. Some of them (Betula, Quercus, Artemisia) showed a certain tendency towards cyclicity.

PERICARP ANATOMY OF EAST EUROPE AN SPECIES OF THE GENUS HEDYSARUM L. (PAPILIONACEAE) SECTIONS GAMOTION AND MULTICAULI

Ye.M. Mironov

Summary

The pericarp anatomy of 8 Hedysarum species of section Gamotion (H. alpinum L., H. arcticum B. Fedtsch., H. hedysaroides (L.) Schinz. et. Thell.) and section Multicaulia (ff. cretaceum Fisch., H. gmelinii Ledeb., H. tauricum Pall. ex Wilid., H. rasoumovianum Helm et Fisch. ex DC., H. ucrainicum B. Kaschm.) has been studied to clarify the position of H. cretaceum in the genus system. Intersectional differences in the anatomical structure of dorsal and ventral regions of the fruit were revealed. On the criterion of these features H. cretaceum looks like other species of section Gamotion. So, including of this species into the section Multicautia (Sagalayev, 1996) seems to be inexpedient.

THE "PSEUDOLATERAL" SHOOTS OF SEDGE CAREX SIDEROSTICTA HANCE

Yu.E. Alexeev

Summary

The introduction of the tern "pseudolateral" shoots (Yancheng, Songyum, 1987 and others) based on the investigation of the Carex siderosticta shoot morphology was a serious error. We have revealed several types of monocarpic shoots with lateral generative shoots of the species. The shoots are not differ from the analogous shoots of other Carex species.

THE REMARKABLE SPECIES OF THE GENUS CREPIS (ASTERACEAE) FROM MIDDLE ASIA

A.N. Senmkov

Summary

The section Omalocline (Cass.) Babe. of the genus Crepis L. is revised to include Chinese species C. tianshanica C. Shin recently described, and new-transferred C. mira (Pavl.) Sennik. endemic to Kirghiz Republic. The taxonomic examination of this section provided to establish three subsections. The hypothesis on the Central-Asiatic affinity of the section Omalocline is speculated. So, section lxeridopsis Babe. of the genus Crepis, and sections Desiphylum Babe. et Stebb. and Stenophytum Babe. et Stebb. of genus Youngia Cass. are, probably, more close to section Omalocline than any other one. Thus, the section under review might be included into the group of closely related genera Jxens Cass. S.I. and Youngia Cass.

ON THE GENUS STELLARIA L. (CARYOPHYLLACEAE) IN EASTERN EUROPA

N.N. Tzvelev

Summary

A new system of the genus Stellaria L. in Eastern Europa is accepted. The species groups of the relationship of S. media (L.) Vill. and S. nemorum L. are distinguished as an independent genera: Alsine L. and Hylebia (Koch) Fourr. The other species are placed into two sections: Stellaria (S. holostea L.) and Larbrea (St.-Hil.) Bluff et Fingerh. (the rest of the species). The last section is divided into 4 subsections: Gramineae TzveL, Longipedes Tzvel., Larbreae (Fenzl) Schischk. and CrassifoUeae Tzvel. some comments are given. For the species S. fennica (Murb.) Pert., S. subulata Boeber ex Schlecht. and others.
