We are developing now a project of presenting of
digital images of type specimens and historical collections of Moscow
State University Herbarium (MW). The head of the project is Dr. Sergey
Balandin from Geobotany department, Moscow State University. Two first
goals are CD-ROMs with images of MW Linnaean and Forsters collections.
The Linnaean CD is preparing in a collaboration with Dr. Charlie
Jarvis (British Museum of Natural History) and the Forsters CD is developing
in a collaboration with Dr. Dan Nicolson (U.S. National Herbarium).
The Linnaean CD is now in a final phase of preparation. We hope it will
be available from the British Museum of Natural History in July, 2000.
The Linnaean CD is publishing with support from the U.S. National Herbarium,
National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
During the work with historical collections of Moscow
University Herbarium we found a quite fine old herbarium. The herbarium
contains some hundreds of specimens arranged in three old woody boxes.
The format of each sheet is almost A4, and the paper possesses a distinctive
type of watermarks. Each plant has a label
with pre-Linnaean Latin name and a German name. Nothing else! It is very
difficult for us to attribute the collection because it is so poorly labeled.
It is reasonable to suppose that Prof. M.N. Karavaev who was the
best specialist in old collections of Moscow University Herbarium did
not attributed the collection. According to M.I. Nasarov (1926, in
Izvestija Glavnogo Botanicheskogo Sada, 25 (3): 29) the herbarium was
collected in early XIX century.
We are posting on the Web several images in hopes
that someone could help us to identify the origin of the collection.
Please let us know if you have any ideas concerning
this collections.
