Plant Physiology Department


The main directions of the scientific investigation:

1. Gametophyte physiology (Prof. I.P.Ermakov).

This group uses immunochemical assays of phytohormones, scanning and emission electron microscopy, light and fluorescent microscopy, oxidative enzyme biochemistry, plant tissue culture. 

2. Mineral nutrition and nitrogen methabolism (Prof. N.D.Alekhina).

The main methods of investigation are ion-selective potentiometry,  1in vivo  0and  1in vitro 0 nitrate-reductase activity assays, conventional inorganic chemistry assays.

3. Photosynthesis (complex group).

The main techniques used are: low-temperature spectroscopy, method of fluorescence induction , chloroplast isolation, inhibitor analysis, chromatography, oxygene-selective polarography, ATPase activity assays.

4. Plant Growth and Morphogenesis Regulation (complex group).

The practical approach is provided by cell and tissue culture in vitro, affine chromatography, agrobacterial plant transformation, physiological characterization of mutants.

The staff of the Pl.Phys.Dept. is also engaged in research on the role of phenolic compounds and phytohormones in plant immunity, photoregulation of guard cell movement, the alternative oxidase activity during pollen development.

The Pl.Phys.Dept. works in close collaboration with the Dept.of Genetics, the Dept. of Botany and the Dept. of Cell Physiology and Immunology of MSU; as well as with Timiryazev Institute of Plant Physiology and Bach Institute of Plant Biochemistry.
